South Tyrol & The Italian Dolomites
Named after French Dr Dolomieu who identified the unique rock which the mountains are formed, the Dolomites stretch from Austria in the north to the Venetian region.
In the first century AD, the Romans invaded the Alps and remnants of their culture, particularly in the Ladin speaking villages, still remains. Though the Dolomites have been almost exclusively an Italian possession since the end of World War I, the culture remains a blend of Austrian Tyrolean and Italian influences.
South Tyrol bordering Austria to the north and Switzerland to the northwest, this is the only region in Italy in which the majority of the population speak German as their mother tongue -road signs are bilingual... or trilingual in the eastern Ladin speaking valleys.
Lake Garda
The largest, and the most spectacular of the northern lakes, with olive groves, vines and citrus trees the shoreline is dotted with historic villages and ancient castles. The lake is 34 miles long, 3 miles across, the average depth is 135 meter.
It boasts a wonderful Mediterranean-type climate with hot summers and mellow winters, and due to its clear waters,is a particular favourite for windsurfing and sailing.
The popluar lakeside resort of Riva is just 8 miles from Lake Ledro and can be reached by local bus. The town has a lively historic centre, with tempting cafés, bars, restaurants & shops. There is also a picturesque harbour from where you can just simply relax in a waterfront café.
